Werqit 80’s Dance – with Jane Fondle and Punky Hoopster

Choreographic Enthusiastic Officer of Hoops, Thighs & Buttocks, Jane Fondle is all about getting physical. Starting out as a star in her parent’s lounge room, she then took it to the streets at age 7, surprising her neighbours by busking at their doorstep, singing and dancing “We built this city on rock and roll”. The outer suburbs of Melbourne just weren’t ready for this singing/dancing entrepreneur. A National Aerobics champion, the world Twister champion (true story!) and a hula hoop performer and teacher, Fondle has developed her own hooping style, combining 80′s dance, aerobics, comedy and hula hooping…. and not once in her 15 years of teaching has she turned her back on her g-tard.

Punky is the new kid on the block who’s got hoops of street cred. Yo! From sequinned synchronised swimming, to brutal water polo, from being a classical flautist, to playing the tuba in a gypsy death-core band; Punky Hoopster likes to play in the extremes! After her hit sitcom finished airing, Punky found herself (and her dog Brandon) ready for a new identity. Fleeing from the paparazzi in Hollywood, she decided to move far away to Australia to start a new life. After being able to trick the locals with her accent, she was welcomed into a hula-hooping tribe where she learned her moves and was given the new name of Punky Hoopster. So with her interest in experimental hula hoop, dance improvisation and serious clowning ….she finds herself here…doing choreography to Madonna? —-Extreme!!! Punky gets funky with timeless dance-moves, to stretch and flex her way to – Punky Power!

Class Description

Before hash-tagging, lol and selfies existed, there was Cyndi Lauper, Prince and WHAM! Take the passion and make it happen; step back in time to when all things glittered in this 80’s dance workshop led by Jane Fondle and Punky Hoopster of Hoops, Thighs & Buttocks. Pull up your legwarmers, tease your hair and don’t forget your glitter. Prior dancing in your lounge room to your favourite 80’s songs is recommended though not a pre-requisite. So pop on your best g-tard and successories and let’s push it real good.

Tarrantella of South Italy – with Rosa Voto

Rosa founded the Melbourne school of Tarantella, the first dance group dedicated to the divulgation and the reinterpretation of traditional and ritualistic southern Italian dances in Australia, in 2011.  She studied academic dances in Florence, Italy, but she keeps a strong and important connection with the traditional dances of her birth place, Puglia, thanks to her great grand mother and other elderly family members.
She teaches regular classes to adult, children and works in primary school and nursing homes with dance and chanting.

Class Descriptions

Tarantella is one of the most ancient ritualistic dances of the South of Italy connected to the rites in honour of the Greek god Dionysus, celebrating ecstasy, chaos and encouraging trance as a tool to self healing.

In this workshop we will explore the traditional steps of a few different styles of tarantella, a group of dances that is strongly connected to the earth, its cycles and that develops inside a circle of people. The workshop fuses together traditional elements of tarantella, including chanting and the use of percussive instruments, together with theatrical and contemporary dance elements to encourage the journey of the individual inside our own culture and community.
